Clean Cooking Himalayas: Transforming Lives and Protecting the Environment

Oyu Green has launched the Clean Cooking Himalayas project in Nepal, equipping 100,000 households across the Himalayan region with energy-efficient cookstoves. This initiative is a significant step toward addressing indoor air pollution, deforestation, and carbon emissions caused by traditional cooking methods.

The project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 220,000 tonnes annually while alleviating the daily struggles of vulnerable communities. Over 100,000 individuals, primarily women and children, now enjoy healthier living conditions and a better quality of life.

A Model for Change

The new cookstoves have drastically reduced exposure to harmful smoke, cutting respiratory illnesses and improving health outcomes. Families have also benefited from a reduced workload, as the shift away from wood-burning stoves has decreased the time spent gathering firewood. This freed-up time has allowed for greater focus on education, work, and family activities.

Preserving Fragile Ecosystems

Environmentally, the project has helped preserve the Himalayan region's biodiversity by decreasing dependence on wood fuel, reducing deforestation, and protecting fragile ecosystems. Community training programs have further ensured the long-term adoption of these clean cooking technologies.

Looking Ahead

The Clean Cooking Himalayas project is set to expand to other mountainous regions, replicating its success to tackle similar environmental and social challenges. It serves as a blueprint for balancing environmental conservation with community well-being.
